The City Clerk serves as the City Election Official for the City of Van Alstyne. City elections shall be conducted in accordance with the Texas Election Code. The general city elections shall be held annually on the first Saturday in May. The City of Van Alstyne operates as a Type A General Law City with a Council/Manager form of government. The Mayor and five Alderman are elected at large.

2020 General Election Information:
The 2020 General Election is for City Council Alderman Place 1, 2 and 3 and will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2020.
The first day to file for a place on the May 2, 2020 General Election Ballot is January 15, 2020.
The last day to file for a place on the May 2, 2020 General Election Ballot is February 14, 2020.
The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy on the May 2, 2020 General Election Ballot is February 18, 2020.
Candidate qualifications for a Type A City are established by Local Government Code, Section 22.032. To qualify to serve as Alderman Place 1, 2 or 3 one must be a resident of the state for 1 year prior to the filing deadline, a resident of the city for 6 months prior to the filing deadline, age 18 or older and must be a registered voter in the city by the filing deadline. Candidate packets will be available at City Hall beginning January 6, 2020.
Early Voting by personal appearance begins April 20, 2020.
