The City Secretary serves as the City Election Official for the City of Van Alstyne. City elections shall be conducted in accordance with the Texas Election Code. The general city elections shall be held annually on the first Saturday in May. The City of Van Alstyne operates as a Home Rule City with a Council/Manager form of government. The Mayor and six Alderman are elected at large.

2022 General Election Information:
The 2022 General Election is for City Council Alderman Place 1, Alderman Place 2 and Alderman Place 3 and will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
The first day to file for a place on the May 7, 2022 General Election Ballot is January 19, 2022.
The last day to file for a place on the May 7, 2022 General Election Ballot is February 18, 2022.
The last day to file a declaration of write-in candidacy on the May 7, 2022 General Election Ballot is February 22, 2022.
Candidate qualifications for a General Law City are established by Local Government Code, Section 22.032. To qualify to serve as Alderman Place 1, Alderman Place 2 and Alderman Place 3, one must be a resident of the state for 1 year prior to the filing deadline, a resident of the city for 6 months prior to the filing deadline, age 18 or older and must be a registered voter in the city by the filing deadline. Candidate packets will be available at City Hall beginning January 17, 2022.
