It is the responsibility and honor of the City Secretary’s Office to conduct and oversee the City’s election process for the City of Van Alstyne. Elections are conducted annually on the Uniform Election Day in May (the first Saturday in May). The City of Van Alstyne operates as a Home Rule City with a Council/Manager form of government. The Mayor and six Alderman are elected at large.
However, Texas Election laws regarding campaign finances and legal matters limit the role of the City Secretary’s Office to accepting and filing the various candidate applications, affidavits and statements and noting the date of filing. Please note that all election records and campaign reports are considered Open Records and will be viewed as such by newspaper/media reporters and opponents.

2023 General Election Information:
The 2023 General Election is for City Council Alderman Place 4, Alderman Place 5, Alderman Place 6 and Mayor and will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
The first day to file for a place on the May 6, 2023 General Election Ballot is January 18, 2023.
The last day to file for a place on the May 6, 2023 General Election Ballot is February 17, 2023.
Home Rule Charter Section 3.02 provides Qualifications for Office as, “Each candidate for election to the City Council or office of Mayor shall be a qualified voter of the City, shall be not less than eighteen (18) years of age, shall have resided in the City not less than twelve (12) months immediately preceding election day, shall meet the requirements of the Texas Election Code; shall not be within one (1) year of a discharge of an inability to vote by reason of felony and shall not, after notice of any delinquency, be in arrears in the payment of any taxes or other liabilities due the City. Each Council Member and the Mayor must continually reside within the City during such officer’s term of office, and any removal of the officer’s residence from the City during his or her term of office shall constitute a vacation of his or her office.”
