“A Museum within a Museum"
as fittingly described by Mayor Jim Atchison The Van Alstyne Historical Museum stands as a hub celebrating the rich heritage and history of Van Alstyne and Grayson County. The museum was recently relocated from its downtown location across from Dorothy Fielder Park to 130 N. Waco Street. It is conveniently situated south of the Van Alstyne Public Library and across Highway 5 from the US Post Office. The three-story house was originally constructed around 1890 by J. S. Cartwright on the east side of town. It was later moved on log rollers pulled by a team of mules to its current location around 1902 and was referred to by locals as ‘The Cartwright House’. It is now serving as an apt venue for the Van Alstyne Historical Museum offering immersive and educational experiences for all ages.
A visit to the Van Alstyne Historical Museum offers a journey through time as the extensive collection of materials and artifacts offers various topics of interest including Van Alstyne’s development and social life, the timber industry, the steam locomotive era, letters home from WWII servicemen, the Main Steet Collection, history of prominent citizens and civic leaders, and 4th Grade essays from 1994-2017 to name a few. Financial support for the museum comes from donations, membership fees, and fundraisers. Interested individuals can contribute to this remarkable institution by contacting the museum curator. Operating hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Private and group tours are available as well as meeting space for small groups by appointment. 903-482-5426 EXT 2180
